"Do not think about what will happen tomorrow, for the same eternal Father who takes care of you today will look out for you tomorrow and always.  Either He will keep you from evil or He will give you invincible courage to endure it."
St. Francis de Sales

 words

"I could produce a book that explores exactly how to use 250,000 different words. Would it make it somehow less comprehensive if I organized it as a dictionary instead of an essay? In fact, it might make it more comprehensive -- and certainly more useful to more people."
Eric Meyer, online-news list, Dec. 21, 1999

  • affect/effect
The distinction between these words is a stumbling block for many writers. It shouldn't be. To AFFECT is to influence, to bring about a change in ("Too much liquor affects your health"). To EFFECT is to produce, to make happen ("Too much liquor effected his downfall").

A metropolitan newspaper recently had this sentence in a story about interstate highways: "The commissioners noted how an I-70 exit to Hays effected that city." This is an apt example of the wrong use of EFFECTED. The exit didn't produce the city, didn't bring it into being. The exit influenced the city's trade, brought about a change in the number of visitors. The exit AFFECTED the city.

He affected you. He influenced you. He effected a masterpiece. He produced a masterpiece. The masterpiece had a big effect on his career.

From "Words on Words," by John B. Bremner, journalism professor at the University Kansas and at Columbia University (Columbia University Press 1980). "Lists words and terms, useful to journalists and students of the English language, including etymology, usage, and interesting facts."
