"Do not think about what will happen tomorrow, for the same eternal Father who takes care of you today will look out for you tomorrow and always.  Either He will keep you from evil or He will give you invincible courage to endure it."
St. Francis de Sales

"Do little things with great love."
St. Jane de Chantal

"The claims of these organizers of humanity raise another question which I have often asked them and which, so far as I know, they have never answered: If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race? Or do they believe that they themselves are made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind?"
Frederick Bastiat

Common Market Food Co-op
1329 California Street, Denver, CO  (1975-1979)

Reunion held July 19-21, 2003

Common Market Food Cooperative staff, February, 1974

This photo is from February, 1975, taken in front of the store at 1329 California Street in downtown Denver (now the site of the Denver Convention Center).  As best we can recall, this is who is in it, from left to right:

top: Ruth ____, Leslie Glickman, Lynn Washburn, Hal Young, Sophia Lo, Larry Hotz, Deb Hartman, Skip Hibbard, Warren Welter

bottom: Don McCullough, Kathie DePoala

The Common Market was a "new wave" food coop that had its roots in a buying club that began at the University of Denver sometime in the late 1960s.  My history is shaky because I didn't get involved with Common Market until April, 1975.

Common Market moved into an old Safeway in downtown Denver in early 1975, moving from a much smaller location on Champa Street (now the Auraria campus).

In 1978, when I left CM, it had approximately 1100 members, which included families and singles.

One of the other "new wave" food coops at the time was Wheatsville Food Co-op, which is still in business.  In 1975 or 1976 Chug did some consulting for Wheatsville under the auspices of the Cooperative League of the USA.

Some of the Common Market folks we're still in touch with are Skip Hibbard (now an attorney with the City & County of Denver), John Cavanaugh (engineering software in the shadow of Pikes Peak) and Jack Mudry (still knowledgeable about herbs and translating in Denver-area courts, spinning music at parties and other events, as well as hosting La Nueva Voz on KUVO radio in Denver), and Larry Hotz, who is selling real estate in Denver.

We hear Warren Welter is now in British Columbia and runs Second Floor Design.
